I have been interested in World War II since my primary school years, especially the life of ordinary people and how they managed to survive this hard period. My other crucial childhood experience was watching films. My interest in films hasn’t abated, even in adulthood. On the contrary, I studied film history at university and while doing this research project I also ended up with films. The period of the World Wars was brought closer to me by war films as watching, for example, ‘The Pianist’ or ‘Saving Private Ryan’ creates a substantially different effect than reading about it in a history book.
